Is current Hip Hop the same as hair metal?

So I was on a bikeride Friday afternoon, chatting with a buddy. We were discussing worst hip hop groups. The unanimous decision was Black Eyed Peas. A side conversation yielded an interesting point. Is current hip hop the new hair metal? Check out the attached image of David Lee Roth. Stupid hair, strange brightly colored outfit, make up, huge ego, highly materialistic. Now look at Lil' John. Stupid hair, strange brightly colored outfit, make up (or grill in this case), huge ego, highly materialistic. Hmmmm. Here's some more comparisons....
Original Metal = Priest, Maiden, Sabbath, etc - innovative, interesting, thoughtful, legendary
Hair Metal = Poison, Skid Row, Van Halen - flash in the pan, makes you say "what the hell was I thinking when I liked that"
Original Hip Hop - A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, Ghetto Boys, etc - innovative, interesting, thoughtful, legendary
New Hip Hop - Lil' John, Chingy, Ludacris, etc. - flash in the pan, will make you say "what the hell was I thinking when I liked that"
Think about it some more. Each shitty trendy version has ballads. They were/are so "now" that they are tired 5 minutes after they come out. Neither has real talent, but nicely over produced and over polished images. Both are way to concerned with materialistic things & ego, rather than their craft. They all have claimed to come from the gutter, whether it be homeless on the Sunset Strip, or bangin' in the ATL. Can you really see this current crop of hip hop staying around for a while? It's only a matter of time before something more real comes along and kills this fluffy crap the way grunge (sorry for using that term) killed hair metal. All these poppy hip hop groups should watch some behind the music to see what happened to all those hair bands who bought big houses and fast cars. I think Kevin Dubro from Quiet Riot bagged my groceries last night. 10 years from now that will be Lil John. Paper or Plastic? Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!?!? Paper please. Yeaaaaaaaaaasssssssss!!!!
Thank God the Quest is touring again!
